AK steel holding, Company
AK Steel Corporation is an American steel company whose predecessor, Armco, was founded in 1899 in Middletown, Ohio. Today, the company's corporate headquarters is situated in West Chester, Ohio, (a suburb of Cincinnati) after having moved from Middletown, Ohio, in August 2007. The company derives its name from the first letter of Armco and Kawasaki Steel Corporation which entered into a limited partnership with Armco in 1989 with the company formally being renamed AK Steel in 1993 when it became a publicly traded company.
AK Steel is the premier producer of automotive carbon and coated steels as well as stainless steels for automotive exhaust system components. Our stainless steels also go into applications like appliances, food processing equipment, chemical and petrochemical equipment and industrial equipment. AK Steel is the only full-line domestic producer of energy efficient electrical steels for power generation, power and distribution transformers, lighting systems and electric motors.
AK Steel is on the leading edge of technology with one of the largest steel research centers in the country. We work closely with customers and potential customers to develop innovative products and applications like our Black Coat™ stainless steel, developed to improve the cosmetic appearance of visible automotive exhaust components while withstanding the increased temperatures of modern engines.
Our subsidiary AK Coatings, Inc. offers carbon and stainless steels coated with the AgION antimicrobial compound. AgION products hold the potential for use in food contact applications along with heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment (HVAC), medical equipment, laboratories, home appliances and more, anywhere microbial growth is a concern.
